Calligraphy Workshop

Today we had a calligraphy workshop with Kris Betterton. It was really good to learn the rules of calligraphy and I learnt quite a lot! I didn’t do so well following the rules completely – I love typography and calligraphy but my general handwriting is terrible! It was worth doing though – it definitely helped when I got home and did some more, this time with gouache and water, my dip pens, and a paint brush. I did do gouache + dip pen calligraphy before on Foundation in Swansea, but it was so difficult and I didn’t have the patience at the time to continue with it. This time I stuck with it and I’m glad I did! I think with calligraphy the more relaxed I am the better the outcome is (I don’t know if that’s a general thing or just me). I think I’ll scan these in and do some more edits digitally later on.

After we’d done the calligraphy, all of us then went out and experimented on huge pieces of paper with different brushes – this was really fun! It was a nice contrast to the formal calligraphy and also nice to work together on one piece. 🙂
